Introduction

Women in menopause have often lacked support and resources. Our team aimed to empower them by creating an app that addresses their unique health needs, offering personalized insights, expert advice, and a supportive community.

The silence & the stigma

Our research revealed that menopause, a natural transition, is often stigmatized and dismissed as aging, despite affecting millions with significant changes. Breaking the stigma and addressing unmet needs is crucial to empower women with confidence and effective care.

Stepping into our users shoes

We interviewed women from India, China, and Brazil at various menopause stages. The target audience is women in their late 40s to early 60s, though menopause can occur earlier or later.

MenoCare target audience

We found that users were lacking awareness of the symptoms they were experiencing, they did not talk about their experience with someone, and searched for information online to learn how to cope with their symptoms.
The detailed user journey map is linked here.

The Problems

Discovering Unmet Needs

For our competitive analysis we chose a variety of consumer-centric solutions addressing women’s health including menstrual health, pelvic and sexual health, fertility, and menopause. Our top contenders were Menobox, Balance and Midday apps.

Looking at the big picture

Menopausal women need better understanding of menopause and support so that they can navigate through their daily activities with ease using effective coping methods.

Our ideation focused on how we might help perimenopausal and menopausal women:

Recognize their symptoms and when they require medical attention
Gain knowledge and awareness
Track symptoms and be aware of their medical health
Have a support group

Sketches

We worked on conceptualizing the features in the sketching phase (linked here) and incorporated the use of wearables for emergency alerts.

Key features

Collectively as a group, we decided to work on the following key features that would benefit users.

Discovering challenges

challenge #1

Designing for the elderly

Our target audience were within the 40s - 50s age group, as a result, they were less tech-savvy and were unable to understand the icons and found the layout to be too complicated for them. We needed to find a way to cater to their age group needs by simplifying things.

We found out that our users were

  • not navigating with ease
  • incorrectly interpreting the icons
  • unable to find the right information
  • unsure how to log symptoms

challenge #2

Improve navigation and app simplicity

Our app navigation was unclear, making it difficult for participants to find options and often getting stuck. We needed to make the app clear and intuitive.

challenge #3

Importance of cultural context

Cultural context plays a critical role in shaping our understanding and interpretation of various aspects of life, including communication, behavior, values, and practices. Colors and icons carry different meanings across regions, reflecting the diverse ways we interpret the world.

Overcoming challenges

Designing The Style Guide

We needed to pay close attention to simplicity with the right colors, effective iconography, typography, and enhance user experience by providing intuitive and universally understood visual cues.

Conclusion

Our main challenge was designing an intuitive app for elderly users unfamiliar with technology. Through iterations and user testing, we developed a solution that addresses their key pain points.

Future Steps

Focusing on these areas can greatly improve the app's inclusivity and support for menopause management.
